‘Guin and the Dragon’ review

Part of the ‘Message in a Bottle’ series, Guin and the Dragon is a mesmerising short film set in the surroundings of a tower block estate.

Guin, a young girl new to the area, stands apart from her peers and views the world with a distinctly Arthurian tint.

When trouble comes she finds herself with a quest worthy of a Knight as, mixing real life with monochromatic CGI, Guin’s journey involves a climb to the top of the tower block to rescue a new friend from the fearsome dragon lady who resides there.

Centred on an impressive performance from the young Isabelle Allen (Les Miserables), we loved the transitions to Guin’s imagination and enjoyed the inventive use of street signs as she tacked the tower, dodging the fearsome ogre of a security guard.

Of course, the real sparkle comes from the dragon lady herself, with Louise Jameson (Doctor Who) on wonderfully charismatic form.

Smart, heart-warming and thoroughly engrossing, Guin and the Dragon is available to watch on YouTube and well worth seeking out.
