Camelot’s new golden couple have ruled over three years of peace and Arthur appears to have implemented some of his revolutionary ideas, including a round table of Knights. Not only does his Queen have a seat, but she offers strategic advice and is left in charge when he rides out in search of a band of missing men. What would Uther say?
The story kicks in pretty fast, with some stunning snow-bound scenes. Arthur takes a path though the lands of Queen Annis (Lindsay Duncan), offering a return encounter with the foe turned ally who Arthur so impressed last year.
Unsurprisingly the missing men are victims of Morgana’s latest scheme. She has hooked up with an impressively intense new ally, Ruadan (Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham), and is on a mission to locate a mysterious object. Morgana seems bolder and more determined than ever, relishing having poor Gwaine in her power once again.
Meanwhile, back at home, Gwen has her own challenges to deal with as she is forced to deal the responsibilities that come with wearing that crown.
As well as the somewhat familiar Arthur/Merlin banter and some comedy moments, there are some more honest interchanges between the two, including one on the eve of battle.
Merlin remains the butt of some jokes, but he is also openly challenging Arthur’s decisions, choosing his own path and doing a nice sideline in putdowns. Tellingly Merlin does not appear to have a place at the Round Table, though he does ride at his master’s side. Those waiting on a magic reveal might not be too thrilled, but there are a few pointed lines in that direction.
On directing duties, Justin Molotnikov provides some hearty battle action as well as an atmospheric, spooky encounter. Fans of naked male torsos should prepare themselves for plenty of shirtless action too, as well as a surprising encounter.
This opening script comes from writer/producer Julian Jones, who appears to be clearly setting out his stall for this year’s arc, with returning friends, new enemies and a fateful vision.
Arthur’s Bane: Part One reconfirms the state of play and shows us the battle lines ready for what may be a climatic series, as well as leaving us on a tremendous cliffhanger moment where a look tells us everything we need to know.
