Here’s our July 2023 Podcast Roundup – our favourites from the worlds of CultBox.
In no particular order, the picks this month are…
Brydon &
We’ve just discovered Brydon &, which sees Rob Brydon enjoy a freewheeling chat with someone in the public eye. It’s what you might expect, a mix of gentle questions and humorous asides with a few impersonations thrown in for good measure.
In July, Rob spoke (separately) to two members of The League of Gentlemen – Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. The conversations covered Edinburgh Festival memories, Inside No. 9, stage work and more.
Also, this month, there’s a great chat to Arthur Darvill. The conversation includes his time on Doctor Who and his West End role in Oklahoma!
Loose Ends
Loose Ends has enjoyed a few Doctor Who universe connections in July. The show’s July 1st edition featured Vivian Oparah, formerly of Class, talks to Clive Anderson about her new Sky Max show Then You Run.
Next, mid-month, Mark Gatiss appeared to talk about his stage work, both acting and directing. And finally, on the 29th, Freema Agyeman popped up ahead of her new play God of Carnage.
That Gaby Roslin Podcast – Minnie Driver
Gaby’s chat with Minnie Driver is a life-affirming affair, which takes in her new book Managing Expectations, her positive attitude to life and her refusal to let other define her.
Gaby also dropped an episode with Hayley Atwell, offering insights into the lengthy process of bringing Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 to the screen.
WHO Corner to Corner – Stephen Gallagher
To coincide with the publication of the new Doctor Who Target book ‘Warriors’ Gate and Beyond’, the WHO C2C chaps enjoyed a lengthy conversation with writer Stephen Gallagher. As well as television Doctor Who, they dug into his career and spoke about his upcoming Tharil story from Cutaway Comics.
Also, this month, there’s an equally absorbing chat with the man who plays everyone’s favourite homicidal Sontaran butler, Dan Starkey.
Shrink the Box – Sex Education
Across two episodes, Ben Bailey Smith and psychologist Sasha Bates dig into the characters and situations of Sex Education, comparing the characters homelives and situations. It’s genuinely fascinating stuff.
No Such Thing as a Fish – No Such Thing as a Short Dalek
The ever-fascinating podcast from the QI Elves welcomed writer Jenny Colgan as a contributor. She brought a Doctor Who fact, prompting a fun discussion about the series.
The Line Up – Simon Pegg
Simon Pegg’s programme for his own fantasy one-day festival brought chat which involved the dawn of the VHS era, horror movies and an enduring love for Paul McCartney.
Film Stories with Simon Brew
This month, Simon Brew delved into the tales behind Goodfellas, The Insider, Layer Cake, Spectre and When Saturday Comes.
He also spent some time with producers Kathleen Kennedy & Frank Marshall discussing the return of a certain Fedora-wearing archaeologist.
So, happy listening… and do let us know if you have any recommendations too.
