Here’s our September 2024 Podcast Roundup – what we’ve been listening in the worlds of CultBox.
In no particular order, our picks this month are…
The News Agents (3rd Sept) – Michael Sheen
Actor Michael Sheen on playing Prince Andrew in Prime Video’s A Very Royal Scandal, as well as memories of Frost/Nixon, his home of Port Talbot, and more. There’s also a follow-up, turning the mic around on interviewer Emily Maitlis herself.
Doctor Who: Too Hot For TV! – Eggy Montage
The podcast which explores the wider worlds of Doctor Who tackles a whole fistful of fringe media. This includes the studio footage from ‘Dimensions in Time’ and Ian Levine’s extended version of that infamous charity special.
Plus, the recent animation of the opening prologue to David Whitaker’s first Dalek novelisation and the 2000 audio play ‘The Rani Reaps the Whirlwind’ starring Kate O’Mara and written by the Rani’s creators, Pip and Jane Baker.
Something Who – Episode 100
The Something Who team return to the bunker to celebrate one hundred episodes (by their count) and do what they do best – discuss a pair of Doctor Who stories, one from the classic era and one from the new series.
Up for scrutiny on this occasion are the 1978 Tom Baker classic ‘The Stones of Blood’ and the 2015 Capaldi two-parter ‘Under the Lake’/‘Before the Flood’, both hundredth tales by some measure.
Brydon & Richard Ayoade
Rob Brydon and Richard Ayoade chat about Wes Anderson, Bruce Springsteen and being a fan of things. Plus, Ayoade’s two new literary efforts, the children’s book The Fairy Tale Fan Club: Legendary Letters Collected by C. C. Cecily and The Unfinished Harauld Hughes.
Also this month, Rob spoke to actor David Morrissey about his sitcom Daddy Issues, as well as Blackpool, holidays and his time on The Walking Dead.
The Sirens of Audio: Pamela Salem – A Tribute
The Doctor Who audio podcast celebrates the work of Pamela Salem, a guest star in both the 70s and 80s who reprised both her Whoniverse roles on audio. In a varied career, she also notched up credits across Blakes’ 7, ER, Party of Five, The West Wing and EastEnders – as well as playing Miss Moneypenny in Never Say Never Again.
The podcast contains elements from a 2021 interview, as well as contributions from Louise Jameson, Sophie Aldred, Karen Gledhill and director Ken Bentley. It’s also available in video form.
Film Stories
This month, the Film Stories podcast takes on the tales behind The Flash, the unmade 24 movie, American Gangster, Piranha II: The Spawning, Outbreak, Predestination, Rain Man and Michael Flatley’s Blackbird.
Also, there’s an ‘In Conversation with’ interview talking to film producer Tommy Harper, which covers Showgirls, work on both the Star Wars and Mission: Impossible franchises, and the newly released Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Plus, a lively chat with Arand Tucker, director of The Critic.
So, happy listening… and do let us know if you have any recommendations too.
