Prime Video’s take on the story surrounding Prince Andrew’s impactful interview lands this September.
In April, Netflix landed their Scoop, a film dramatization of the Prince Andrew Newsnight interview affair.
Now, it’s the turn of Prime Video who have a longer, three-part retelling of the story. This comes from the producers of A Very English Scandal (Jeremy Thorpe) and A Very British Scandal (The Argyle divorce). Naturally, it’s called A Very Royal Scandal.
While Scoop drew on the book by Newsnight producer Sam McAllister, A Very Royal Scandal appears to cast its net wider, as the interview itself takes place in the second episode, with the first looking at the buildup and the third exploring the fallout for the Prince and the royal family as a whole. Interestingly, Emily Maitlis is an executive producer on the series.
Here’s the synopsis for A Very Royal Scandal:
One night. One hour. One interview that sent shockwaves around the globe. Based on the real-life 2019 interview between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew over the scandalous accusations he faced regarding his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre. A Very Royal Scandal follows the action of Maitlis and Prince Andrew in the lead-up to the interview, the ground-breaking event itself and the many questions left in its wake that would change their lives forever.
Ruth Wilson (Luther) plays Newsnight‘s Emily Maitlis. Her interviewee is Michael Sheen (Good Omens), who adds Prince Andrew to the roster of real life figures he’s played.
The series also stars Joanna Scanlan (Slow Horses) as Amanda Thirsk and Alex Jennings (The Crown) as Sir Edward Young.
Plus, Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) as Stewart Maclean, Claire Rushbrook (Rivals) as Sarah Ferguson and Extraordinary‘s Sofia Oxenham as Princess Eugenie.
The series comes from writer Jeremy Brock and director Julian Jarrold. The producers are Blueprint Television for Amazon MGM Studios.
It premieres globally at Prime Video on September 19th, 2024.
