The concluding episode of Toby Whithouse’s two-part Doctor Who story in Season 9 was bookended by the Doctor discussing the Bootstrap Paradox.
A time travel paradox in which an object or information can exist without ever being created, the concept became a key part of the plot in ‘Under the Lake’ and ‘Before the Flood’ as the Doctor hypothesises ‘Who really composed Beethhoven’s Fifth?’
Fortunately, writer Toby Whithouse is on hand to explain things in a short video clip, in case it’s still making you scratch your head in confusion.
The Being Human creator comments: “That’s ultimately what science fiction should be doing.”
