The actor told The Telegraph: “Merlin was five years of my life. I enjoyed every year, every day. I had a brilliant time on it. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wanted to do more [different roles].”

Asked if he thought Merlin was likely to return for future one-off specials or a rumoured movie, Morgan commented: “I don’t think I’d be breaking any rules if I said I don’t think there will be any more [Merlin]. It would be the opposite of what I want to be — not the project, but being static. As an actor, you need to be versatile. You need to challenge yourself.”

The show’s co-creator Johnny Capps announced last summer that he hoped to do “a trilogy” of Merlin movies.
