Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed that the inspiration for the show’s new title sequence came from a fan-made clip on YouTube.
Leeds-based motion graphics professional Billy Hanshaw created a mock version of a new title sequence for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor last year and posted it on his YouTube channel.
The video has received over 700,000 views since it went online in September 2013.
Steven Moffat revealed in New York this week: “Hanshaw created this title sequence, put it up on YouTube. I happened to cross it, and it was the only new title idea I’d seen since 1963. We got in touch with him, and said, okay, we’re going to do that one.”
Moffat then commissioned Hanshaw to work with BBC Wales on Series 8’s new title sequence.
