Butterfly – official trailer for Daniel Dae Kim’s new spy thriller

Ahead of a panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, and a mid-August launch date, Prime Video release the trailer for the explosive Butterfly

The show, based on BOOM! Studios’ 2015 graphic novel, stars Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Avatar: The Last Airbender), alongside Piper Perabo (Billions), Reina Hardesty (The Flash) and Louis Landau (Rivals).

Butterfly is a character-driven spy thriller that explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage.

It’s centered on David Jung (Kim), an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him, and he finds himself pursued by Rebecca (Hardesty), a deadly, sociopathic young agent assigned to kill him, and Caddis, the sinister spy organization she works for.

Butterfly comes from co-creators Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist, Gotham) and the novelist Steph Cha, based on Arash Amel’s original work.

The cast also includes Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo, Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell, Sean Dulake, and Nayoon Kim. Plus, Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa appearing in guest roles. Kitao Sakurai directs the first two episodes.

San Diego Comic Con 2025 Butterfly Panel

The show will be the focus of a panel on Friday July 25th at this year’s SDCC, where star and executive producer Daniel Dae Kim will talk about the journey to bring the series from the page to the screen. He appears alongside Piper Perabo and Reina Hardesty to reminisce about filming in South Korea.

Also appearing are showrunner Ken Woodruff and his fellow co-creator Steph Cha, graphic novel creator Arash Amel and executive producer Stephen Christy on behalf of BOOM! Studios.

Butterfly lands all six episodes on Prime Video on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
