‘Yonderland’ Season 2 finale review: ‘Careful What You Wish For’

Posted Filed under

It’s the thrilling conclusion of Yonderland’s second season, and it’s jolly thrilling indeed.

Two estranged sisters finally face off, and nothing will ever be the same again. *insert thrilling musical cue here* Dun dun dunnn!!!

But seriously, while Imperatrix is busily transferring her life force into a fearsome new creature to do her evil bidding, the Elders have been tipped off to a wishing tree, with sexy results. Letting the Elders loose on a tree whose fruit grants wishes, we learn new things – about certain Elders’ gender identities and body image issues – and we learn things we already knew; namely, the Elders are really, very, painfully stupid people.

And Pete learns an awful lot indeed about what Debbie’s been up to when she wanders into the cupboard. Indeed, at long last, Pete learns that Debbie is the chosen one. No, Pete, don’t take your kids to Yonderland, it is a silly place! Then, just as quickly as he discovers Debbie’s secret job, he forgets again.

Oh Yonderland, you tease! But what’s most brilliant of all is just how cool he thinks it is that his wife is responsible for saving a magical realm on a ridiculous number of occasions. Way to be a supportive and awesome spouse, Pete: your wife rocks.

But as Imperatrix’s plan is backfiring terribly, Negatus is coaxed out of retirement and convinces Debbie to help him and the demons save the realm from total destruction. Debbie and Imperatrix meet, and it’s quite sad, really: it turns out their combined destiny was not to rule the realm with an iron fist, but to save it with a lullaby.

Just as Debbie is reunited with her long-lost sister, Imperatrix’s own life force is lost along with her creation. Does this mean peace will prevail in the realm? Hardly: Negatus wastes no time in graciously accepting his promotion, and life goes on.

So what’s next for Debbie, Elf, and everyone? How will Negatus fare in his new job? Will she pack up with Pete and the kids and move somewhere new? Will their new kitchen have a person-sized cupboard with coincidental lighting problems? I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

I’m going to miss having an episode of this to review every week, I really am. Yonderland continues to be one of my favourite shows on television right now, jam-packed with giggles and such beautifully crafted visuals, you can feel that so much love has gone into everything in this show.

Thanks, Yonderland, and the brilliant cast of artists who make you. I’ll just sit here quietly and wait for Season 3.
