As we prepare to head into ‘Dark Water’ on Saturday night, CultBox has decided to take a look back at the previous ten episodes and reveal our favourite so far…
10. ‘Time Heist’
What we said: “For the bulk of its running time, ‘Time Heist’ plays – as it intends to – like a sassy, spacey variation on the heist thriller … This may be the trouble with such relentlessly twist-driven, time travel adventures: the need for exposition overrides the need for emotional truth.”
9. ‘In the Forest of the Night’
What we said: “An overgrown London, with familiar landmarks emerging from the trees like lost furniture in an untended garden, is the kind of freakish occurrence in a near-contemporary setting that characterised the Third Doctor era. The ecological subtext is also solidly Pertweeovian.”
8. ‘Into the Dalek’
What we said: “Ford and Moffat may be embracing Terrance Dicks’s mantra that the best ideas are honestly stolen. But in an age of moral relativism, and in a series which believes wholeheartedly in the power of redemption, it makes sense that the programme should return to the idea that even the embodiment of evil might have a soul.”
7 . ‘Robot of Sherwood’
What we said: “This is an episode that is unmistakeably by Mark Gatiss in its execution and which is as pun-packed as its title might suggest. Gosh, it is fun. Incredibly fun.”
