The first of a two-part thriller, ‘The Zygon Invasion’ brought Doctor Who’s most famous shape changers back to our screens.
While we wait for ‘The Zygon Inversion’ this weekend, here are a few recommendations for further viewing…
‘Horror of Fang Rock’ (1977)
The Zygons are not Doctor Who’s only shape-changers and we would be remiss not to mention the Sixth and Seventh Doctor’s comic travelling companion Frobisher, the Whifferdill shape-shifter who became stuck in the form of a penguin, or Kamelion – the shape-changing robot who was briefly a companion of the Fifth.
Only a couple of years after ‘Terror of the Zygons’, the show introduced another shape-changing monster. Arriving at a lonely lighthouse sometime around the turn of the century, the Fourth Doctor and Leela encountered a member of the Rutan Host, the deadly enemies of the Sontarans.
The claustrophobic story saw a fearsome Rutan Scout as it picks off everyone on the small island one by one.
‘The Claws of Axos’ (1971)
While not quite in the Zygon or Rutan league, the Axons also carried the ability to change their form. Presenting as golden humanoids with a gift for mankind, their native shape was far more tentacled and menacing.
Although he was responsible for bringing them to Earth, it took an unholy alliance between the Master and the Doctor to defeat these space born energy vampires.
