The BBC knew for months that there would be no 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special without releasing this information, causing Doctor Who fans nearly half a year of false hope and contention.
The BBC announced 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special in October 2025 alongside the news that the co-production partnership with Disney was at an end.

In November 2025, Radio Times asked Russell T Davies was asked whether he’s started writing the special and this was his reply:
“Not at the moment because I’m busy on [The War Between the Land and the Sea]. I’m also shooting [Tip Toe] in Manchester, so next year my plate clears and we’ll get to work on that.”
On 5 December 2025, BBC Newsbeat reported that Russell T Davies said “We haven’t even started work on it yet. I know what happens, but I better write it down soon in case I get run over by a bus.” Newsbeat further reported that Davies told them that he shared his plan with BBC bosses, leaving them “with jaws agape, loving it”.
Since The War Between the Land and the Sea transmitted in December 2025 and Tip Toe wrapped filming in December 2025, that arguably left Davies a free slate in January 2026 to write the Doctor Who Christmas special.

According to Davies’ Instagram post of 10 June 2026, he had never written a script for the special. Additionally, he defied sceptics to come up with proof that a script was ever written. Since his admission that he he never penned a script which he had previously promised to write is not the most noble of revelations, I’m inclined to believe the plans he had in his head were never completely typed out.
Since Davies didn’t write the script in January 2026, this is likely the time frame when he, Bad Wolf and the BBC “collectively decided” not to go forward with the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special. Since the BBC didn’t see fit to announce the cancellation until June, that’s five months of needless false hope for Doctor Who fans, who argued among themselves online regarding the reasons there were no signs of progress on the special.
The most telling early sign that something was amiss was that Bad Wolf never set up a private limited company (LTD) for the purposes of television programme production activities for the Doctor Who Christmas special. This is a crucial first step.

Since the beginning of 2026, Davies didn’t make any more grand statements about his plans for the Christmas special.
In May 2026, when Russell T Davies spoke of his television career and future plans at a fundraiser in Cardiff. Curiously, the host never asked about the Doctor Who Christmas special nor did Davies bring it up. The subject seemed taboo.
In the same month and year, Davies told the Full Disclosure podcast, “I won’t be back filming anything until next year.” Nothing until 2027? Obviously, a 2026 Christmas special can’t be filmed in 2027.

To be fair, Doctor Who fans are perfectly capable of online arguments without the help of a lie of omission from the BBC. However, it would have saved a lot of time, confusion and contention if fans could have found out about the Christmas special cancellation sooner and were able to move on.
Announcing the cancellation sooner may have made it possible for the BBC to put Doctor Who out to tender earlier this year. As it stands now, there is no Invitation To Tender (ITT) listed on the BBC Commissions website. The BBC stated that they will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender some time this year and that details of the tender will be “announced in due course.”
