On BBC Breakfast hosted by Sally Nugent and John Kay, former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies says the use of AI to create episodes of the programme is a complicated discussion.

John Kay, when mentioning that BBC Director General Matt Brittin had seen and praised a fan-made a Doctor Who episode created by AI, asked Davies’ for his thoughts on that.
“Don’t start me on that. If you lead me into an opinion on artificial intelligence, it’ll chase me for the rest of my life and get quoted at me. I think it’s a very interesting time. I think fans are now making their own episodes on AI which are broadcast quality — almost. When I was young, I used to sit and draw episodes. No-one was stopping me doing that. It’s a very complicated discussion but I think we’re essentially looking at the end of copyright.”

Davies’ new memoir, The Queerest of Folk: A Life in Television is available to pre-order for an 8 October 2026 release.
