John Wyndham’s 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids is to be the basis of a multiple mini-series adaptations.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios have picked up the rights to the classic British science fiction novel The Day of the Triffids.
The tale, which has enjoyed numerous adaptations, tells the story of an invasion of Earth by sentient killer plants. With most of the population blinded by a meteor shower, small groups of survivors struggle to survive.
Amazon reportedly have plans to adapt the story as a run of miniseries, looking at the invasion from different cities. While they’re currently seeking a writer, they have a director in Chernobyl‘s Johan Renck.
Don Murphy and Susan Montford of Angry Films will executive produce, with Jillian and Dennis DeFrehn of Preger Entertainment, who hold the novel’s rights also executive produce. As will Jordan Renck and Michael Parets of Sinestra.
Triffids!
The Day of the Triffids came to the big screen in 1962 for movie starring Howard Keel.
Later, more faithfully, it landed as a BBC mini-series in 1981. They corporation had another go in 2009, starring Dougray Scott, Joely Richardson and Eddie Izzard, which was less well received.
The BBC have also tackled the story on radio three times over the years.
There’s wider material Amazon could draw from too; 2001’s sequel novel Night of the Triffids by Simon Clark was adapted for audio by Big Finish in 2014. It brought in an international angle and we really enjoyed it.
We also covered an innovative touring stage production by Platform 4 last year.
We’ll keep you posted on The Day of the Triffids.
