We’re almost a week away from Jodie Whittaker’s debut episode as the Thirteenth Doctor and she’s been on the publicity trail – talking about the process of picking out her Doctor’s costume..
Whittaker was speaking to BBC Radio 6 Music about how surprised she was at the amount of say she had.
“It was really collaborative. More so than any other job,” she said. “Not because you don’t get a say on anything else, but because if you’re doing something that’s 18th century, I’m not going to rock in and be like, ‘I’ve got this great idea! I wanna wear Converse’.”
“Like, I’ve got no knowledge… There’s a certain mood, like with Beth Latimer [in Broadchurch], you have to look like you’re from a certain place and a certain time. But the wonderful thing about The Doctor is that you don’t have any of those rules.”
Whittaker continued to discuss how colour factored into the Thirteenth Doctor’s ensemble. “For me, the most important thing was the use of colour,” she said. “Different aspects of the blues to represent the sky. So, the inside lining of the coat is like space and the outside is like sky. Things like that!”
“I loved referencing the worlds that you’re coming from into the costume, but then it needed to be comfortable. Often with heroic characters, I just think, ‘That looks really sweaty!’ Do you know what I mean? ‘I bet it takes you like an hour to get in that?!’ Whereas mine is really comfy, and comfy for anyone — boy or girl. Shock, horror!”
“I didn’t want to be worn by the costume. The T-shirt makes it quite young, but the braces and the trousers are quite structured so that could be from a completely different time period.”
Doctor Who series 11, episode 1, ‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth‘ airs on Sunday 7th October at 6:45pm on BBC One.
