Doctor Who Series 14: sets, settings and filming locations

Posted Filed under

Executive producer Phil Collinson gave an exclusive update to Doctor Who Magazine 586 on Series 14 production from his office at Wolf Studios in Cardiff.

“Filming began for the next season on Monday 5 December, with a week in studio. On some incredible sets!”

Jane Tranter proudly described one of the sets in a separate DWM interview.

“…the ceiling height in the studio where we’ve built the new TARDIS [Interior] set is higher than Pinewood’s 007 Stage!”

“After that, we moved out to a far-flung location further west in Wales,” Collinson continued. “I wonder if, by the time you read this, we were spotted? Maybe by a passing rambler.”

This location was the White Cross Inn in Groeswen, Wales 12-16 December, according to one of the pub’s regular patrons.

Well that was an interesting week…the pub was used for filming all week! Normal service resumes today!

Collinson also revealed that last day of filming before production took a holiday break was “on Saturday 17 December, in a very public location. Well, public and yet kind of hidden, so I wonder how much has been kept secret.”

This location was at the locks at Cardiff Bay Barrage. Ncuti Gatwa included the best photo of the filming among the photos in his Instagram post.

When the production came back from holiday break, they filmed in several new settings.

“…we’re facing the New Year, with our first location of 2023: a pub!,” Collins revealed. “But a pub on what planet, what year? You’ll find out!”

This pub location is a mystery but the next known filming was at a campaign headquarters set built on location at Capitol Shopping Centre in Cardiff on 3 January.

On 4 January, the production moved to a new location at Swansea University Bay Campus in Wales.

Filming at the university is expected to continue into 7 January.

On 9 and 10 January, filming will occur in and near Newport Market in Wales. The crew is already cordoning off the parts of the location.

The latest information from DWM’s Production Diary reveals recce for the current filming block (pre-filming locations reconnaissance) included “urban environments”, a “sporty location” which required the recce crew to wear life jackets, and “the most stunning, perfect location to open and episode” at what appears to be at a coastline in a photo in the magazine of the script editor on recce at the location on a particularly stormy day.

Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three 60th anniversary specials starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. In the following festive period, Ncuti Gatwa will star in his first full Doctor Who episode as the Fifteenth Doctor.

Doctor Who Magazine Issue 586 is on sale Thursday 5 January from Panini, WH Smith and as a digital edition from PocketMags.
