Frasier 2023 - Kelsey Grammer as Frasier

Frasier – revival show cancelled by Paramount+ after two seasons

Professor Frasier Crane’s third act saw him back in Boston and reconnecting with his son.

Frasier Crane, as played by Kelsey Grammer, is one of television’s great survivors.

Initially introduced to the Boston bar sitcom Cheers bar in its third season, as a love interest for one of the main characters, he became a regular throughout the rest of the show’s 11-year run. During that time, the psychiatrist married the icy Lilith Sternin and the pair had a son, Frederick.

Then, remarkably, Frasier went on to lead a spin-off which continued his story. The new shown transplanted the action to his hometown of Seattle, introducing his father Martin, a retired police officer, his even more neurotic brother Niles and a host of characters as the professor became a radio phone-in host. Like Cheers before it, Frasier ran for 11 seasons and won a substantial haul of Emmy awards before concluding in 2004.

Revival

In 2023, after a lengthy period of speculation, Frasier returned on the Paramount+ streamer. The revival placed him back in Boston, attempting to reconnect with the grown-up Frederick, now Freddie, a firefighter. The retooled show built a new family around Frasier, with Nicholas Lyndhurst taking on the role of Frasier’s old college friend and Harvard professor Alan Cornwall.

Despite some entertaining episodes and a fair whack of nostalgia, as well as some returning familiar faces, Deadline reports that Paramount+ have opted not to continue with Frasier. Apparently, the show has not broken through on the streamer in a meaningful way.

Hope

However, it might not be the end for Frasier Crane’s third act. The show’s producer CBS Studios remains committed to the series and plans to shop it to other outlets. There’s a chance it might find a place on a more comedy friendly streamer such as Prime Video or Hulu/Disney+.

We’ll keep you posted on Frasier.
