If it comes to fruition, there could be a decade of Harry Potter shows on the small screen.
It’s been nearly eight months since news broke of MAXs plans to make a Harry Potter television series, but a report in Deadline suggests there’s some movement.
The piece, an exclusive from a trio of their writers, suggests the project has gone through the first stage of pitches, with a mix of writers – both British and American – involved.
While no one from Warner Brothers Television or MAX has gone on the record, sources indicate ideas are still nascent. Interestingly, there’s also the suggestion that MAX is open to developing more than one idea based on Harry Potter.
For us, as we said previously, it still seems too soon. The films are incredibly embedded in the public consciousness, even if the prequel Fantastic Beasts series stuttered to a halt. Unlike Percy Jackson, there’s no desire to right the wrongs of a misjudged adaptation which didn’t please the fanbase. However, The Secrets of Dumbledore was released in 2022 and it’s difficult to imagine any Potter television show hitting screens before 2026. That’s a clear 15 years since the release of The Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Writers
The writers linked to the project include Martha Hillier (The Last Kingdom), Kathleen Jordan (Teenage Bounty Hunters), Tom Moran (The Devil’s Hour) and Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes).
The Harry Potter series will be produced by Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros Television. Brontë have been behind all of JK Rowling’s Strike adaptations, as well as The Casual Vacancy. The company is chaired by Rowling’s agent Neil Blair, who will executive produce with her and Brontë CEO Ruth Kenley-Letts. Additionally, David Heyman, who produced the Potter movies, was in talks to exec produce too.
We’ll keep you posted on the Harry Potter television series.
