Batwoman TV show casts Rachel Skarsten as its big bad

Batwoman has cast its big bad, so we now know who will be facing off against Ruby Rose’s Kath Kane in The CW’s upcoming Gotham-set superhero series: Rachel Skarsten has nabbed the show’s biggest villainous role, and we’ve got all the info right here…

Trade publication Deadline Hollywood has reported that Rachel Skarsten has signed up to play a key villainous character named Alice in the pilot episode of Batwoman.

“If Batwoman had a Joker,” Deadline’s report tells us, “it would be Alice, the leader of her Lewis Carroll–inspired Wonderland Gang. Swinging unpredictably between maniacal and charming, Alice has made it her mission to undermine Gotham’s sense of security.”

Based on that short character summary that Deadline offered, this character sounds like she could be related to the Mad Hatter (a villain from the comics, who is obsessed with Alice In Wonderland).

We already saw the Mad Hatter in Gotham, where his not-particularly-villainous sister was also called Alice. It’ll be interesting to see if Batwoman acknowledges the Hatter’s existence in DC lore or just forges ahead by presenting its its own Alice as a new character.

Skarsten has form with DC and The CW: she played Dinah Lance in Birds Of Prey, back when The CW was called The WB; and she also appeared as Queen Elizabeth I in The CW’s Reign. You also may have seen Skarsten in the movies Fifty Shades Of Grey and Molly’s Game.

The Batwoman pilot is set to be written by Caroline Dries and directed by David Nutter, and we’ll be sure keep you posted as we hear more about it.
