The news of its existence lit up the internet, with cautious optimism being the order of the day, but now we’re hearing that Fox’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot is still in the very earliest days of development.
Last month, we learned that the series’ original showrunner Joss Whedon has brought in Midnight, Texas creator Monica Owusu-Breen to run the Buffy reboot. Whedon will have an executive producer role, while Owusu-Breen takes the creative lead.
It all sounded very positive, and a lot of people are eager to see what this show turns out to be. Will it be a straight reboot, a belated sequel or a passing of the torch that covers a bit of both? The latter option seems the most likely, but it’ll be a while until we know for sure.
Speaking at a swanky press event in the USA, Fox Television Group CEO Gary Newman revealed that the Buffy reboot is “not on an incredibly, fast track, but we’re hopeful.”
He also said this, revealing that it is still very early days and there hasn’t been much formal writing done as of yet:
“There’s actually no script to see. We’ve sat down with creators and had conversations with them about it. It’s a very exciting prospect. It’s fairly early. We haven’t pitched it to any possible licensees yet, all of that is still to come. We’re thrilled that Joss has engaged Monica who he worked with on one of his other series. She’s the person who is day to day on it. She has a great take on the show.”
It sounds like it’ll be a fairly long while until the show comes to fruition, then, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as more Buffy news comes to light during the production process.
