The kiss between Madame Vastra and Jenny Flint in the first episode of Doctor Who‘s new series has reportedly been cut from Asian broadcasts.
Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and Jenny (Catrin Stewart) had their first on-screen kiss in ‘Deep Breath’ last month, with Vastra sharing her oxygen while the pair attempted to hold their breath.
The scene was removed from the version of the show broadcast on the BBC Entertainment channel in Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
A BBC spokesperson told Pink News: “In order to comply with broadcast regulations in Asia where our BBC Entertainment channel airs, BBC Worldwide made a brief edit to the first episode of Doctor Who Series 8, but did so without detracting from the storyline.”
The cut was made in order to comply with Singapore’s MDA broadcast code and only one edit of the show is produced for the entire Asian region.
Six complaints were made about the scene in the UK, but Ofcom made the decision not will not to investigate further.
They stated: “Ofcom can confirm it received six complaints about a kiss broadcast in an episode of Doctor Who on Saturday 23 August. Having assessed the complaints, we can confirm that they do not raise issues warranting further investigation. Our rules do not discriminate between scenes involving opposite-sex and same-sex couples.”
Series 8 continues on Saturday 6 September with ‘Robot of Sherwood’.
‘Deep Breath’ will be released on DVD and Blu-ray next week.
