Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Moffat confirmed that there were no current plans, stating that the rumour of a film started by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director David Yates was “all some weird fantasy”, before going on to say “I’m the voice of Doctor Who… The BBC own Doctor Who and, for the moment, I run it for them. So I can assure you definitively that [it] was all nonsense.”
Expressing himself as a fan of Yates, Moffat went on to explain his supposed position within the project. “I don’t think he was ever signed to it. I never signed him, so he’s not. But I think he’s [expressed] an interest in doing it and he’s a very fine director and I think he’d certainly be someone that would be on the list for directing such a project.”
For those hoping to see a big screen outing for the Doctor someday soon, hope is not all lost. The enigmatic showrunner went on to discuss the idea of a Doctor Who film, clearing up many of the worries fans were having about such a project. “We hopefully will do a Doctor Who film someday…”
According to the Moff, any such film will be run by the production office in Cardiff, feature whoever the current Doctor is on TV and will most certainly be a part of the official canon and not a reboot story which, as Moffat rightly claims, would be “writing the book on how to destroy a franchise.”
With Moffat’s position seemingly clear, what do you think of the possibility of a Doctor Who movie in the future? Let us know below…
