Europe’s tech hub cities revealed

Posted Filed under

Technology is a massive industry with businesses specialising in different sectors all around the world.

Silicon Valley in the United States is home to many of the world’s largest technology corporations and start-up technology businesses. Generally, when one company thrives in a specific area, other companies and the industries involved in their supply chain also thrive.

Many European countries are attempting to build their own tech-hubs within their borders to try to emulate the success of Silicon Valley, and to encourage the commercial sector to remain competitive. These cities are fantastic to visit. These cities normally have great access to wifi and mobile internet, and inhabitants are always creating new apps and ways to explore their surroundings for visitors to use.

London

London’s aptly named “Silicon Roundabout” surrounds the Old Street Roundabout in Shoreditch. It has been given this nickname due to the amount of start-up businesses which have sprung up over the past few years. It is now a tech-hub for some major companies, although due to the popularity of the area for businesses, the rent has almost doubled in price per square foot – and that’s only in the last three years. This spike in popularity seems to be turning this area into a tech-city which isn’t a bad thing for the city of London.

Some of the most well-known companies have started in London, with some of the top start-ups being Huddle and Just Eat.

Berlin

Berlin has sprung up as a great city for tech start-ups to go to, as low cost for rental properties mean ambitious companies can set up here and expand their business if they so wish. The company SoundCloud originally began in Stockholm but since it moved to Berlin it really took off. They have offices in many different countries including England and America showing that with the right location, it is possible to grow a start-up business into a global company.

The city of Berlin is proving itself to be a key player on digital media, social games and the consumer web and it has seen a host of start-up businesses recently.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is becoming a great area for start-up tech businesses to grow in. Islands Brygge is fast becoming known as a “Start-up Village” due to Founders House and it is a place where small and established tech businesses are accelerating. By having lots of similar companies located next to each other, knowledge sharing is increased and so is the growth of these individual companies.

According to the World Bank, Denmark is the easiest place to do business in Europe and the 4th easiest place to do business in the world. With such high acclaim, it’s no wonder the city of Copenhagen is thriving with tech start-ups.

With solid investment, encouragement and reducing barriers to entry, the government is helping new tech start-ups to make a name for themselves, and to enhance the city’s access as a whole to technology. Startups benefit the surrounding area, by being able to provide them with the services that they create, as well as the secondary benefit from the increased infrastructure, including faster internet, and better access to wifi points. All of which make it easier to visit a city as a tourist. With more apps available it’s never been more exciting to visit a city with a great tech infrastructure.
