News of the Paramount Channel reboot of classic teen movie Heathers has been seeping out for more than a year now, and now we have some more.
News regarding casting for the new incarnation of Heathers – including one of the cast of the original movie, Shannen Doherty, appearing in the show’s pilot episode – has come along in dribs and drabs since October last year.
For example, we now know who the three eponymous Heathers. Leader of the clique, Heather Chandler, will be played by stage/musical actress Melanie Field; cheerleader Heather Mathews will be played by newbie Jasmine Mathews; while a gender-switched incarnation of Shannen Doherty’s Heather (Heather Duke) will be played by comedian Brendan Scannel.
We also know that the roles played previously played by Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in Michael Lehmann’s 1988 black comedy, Veronica and JD, will be filled by Grace Victoria Cox (Under The Dome) and another relative newcomer, James Scully.
With the series now through the pilot stage and picked up as a full series in the US, the cast is being fleshed out with the addition of Hellboy/Anger Management star Selma Blair. Indeed, she recently gave a preview of her character via her Instagram account.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, she will play “ Jade, Heather Duke’s step-mother, described as a stripper and menthol smoker who is rough around the edges but with a bit of glamor to her. She’s biding her time until her 82-year-old husband kicks the bucket.”
Here she is.
After a prolonged development, which saw the show shift in terms of tone, episode length, and the channel that will air it, Heathers is now due to appear in early 2018 – at least in the US.
