Speaking to Graham Norton on his BBC Radio 2 show, Gillan explained: “I don’t really know what’s going on. The time is going to come when Amy and Rory have to leave, it’s inevitable and that’ll make me really, really sad. But also that’s the nature of the show and what’s so good about it and keeps it exciting…”
She added: “I think that’s all up in the air at the moment. I know that I’m going to be coming back, but I’m not sure when.”
The actress previously stated in the new Brilliant Book of Doctor Who that Amy Pond could be killed off when she leaves the show: “I think it could be done, if you tackled it right… death could be an option.”
Doctor Who will return to BBC One this Christmas with a 60-minute special, guest starring Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), comedian Bill Bailey, Arabella Weir (The Fast Show) and Alexander Armstrong (Armstrong & Miller).
Discussing the festive episode, Gillan told Graham Norton: “It is really Christmassy and it could be even more Christmassy [than last year’s].”
