Gatwa told Radio Times he was “very pleased”, adding:

“Being recognised for anything is just bloody lovely, isn’t it? Let alone being on the RadioTimes.com TV 100 list. TV is on fire at the moment and so to top the list as well feels extra cool.”

Gatwa rose to fame playing Eric Effiong in the Netflix series Sex Education, for which he won a Best Actor Scottish BAFTA in 2020. He will appear in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials before debuting in his first full episode as the 15th Doctor in the 2023 Doctor Who festive special. Gatwa will also appear as Ken in the Barbie movie to be released in July.

Current Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies, took the top spot last year.

“It’s extremely cool company to keep,” Gatwa continued to RT. “The titans that have topped the list before me, people such as Russell T Davies, Michaela Coel, Jodie Whittaker, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Colman are all inspirations to me and their work is something I aspire to. They’re just really great storytellers above all else and that’s all I could want to do.”

Ncuti Gatwa can be seen on Sex Education Series 4 some time in mid 2023, the Barbie movie to be released 21 July 2023, the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary in November 2023, the Doctor Who festive special in December 2023 and Doctor Who Series 14 in 2024.
