Report: Disney in talks with BBC to stream Doctor Who

Posted Filed under

Walt Disney Co. is in discussions with the BBC about acquiring the streaming rights to a new Doctor Who series according to Bloomberg.

Bloomberg reports that the talks are in the early stages and there’s no guarantee a deal will be reached, according to people with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. Disney is reportedly looking to bulk up on established entertainment properties as it builds its global streaming service.

The programme would potentially air globally on the Disney+ streaming service. The BBC would also air the program. There is no word on whether BBC America and other BBC affiliates around the world would continue to provide the program if a deal with Disney is reached.

The next episode of Doctor Who to air will be the BBC centenary special in October of 2022 in which Jodie Whittaker’s thirteenth Doctor is expected to regenerate.

In a partnership between BBC Studios and Bad Wolf LTD, Russell T Davies will write and produce Doctor Who 60th anniversary content to air in 2023, likely three specials with an incarnation of the Doctor portrayed by tenth Doctor actor David Tennant.

Davies will go on to write and produce the new Doctor Who series featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, likely to air in 2024.
