Rumour: Miriam Margolyes cast in Doctor Who 60th anniversary special

Character actress Miriam Margolyes will have a substantial guest appearance in one of the upcoming Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, according for a report by The Sun.

The Sun’s source, identified as a television insider, said: “With an acting career almost as old as Doctor Who itself, it’s a surprise to think she hasn’t already featured in an episode over the past six decades.”

“But that only makes her even more of a prestige addition to a cast which already features Neil Patrick Harris and Catherine Tate…”

“The show’s creators felt that she was such a great character in real life that she was a natural choice to play the character she will have on the sci-fi show, which the BBC are keeping a closely guarded secret.”

Margolyes is an 81-year-old British-Australian actress who has gained prominence as a character actor on stage and screen. She received a BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence and portrayed Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film series. She’s also known for the BBC series Call the Midwife. Margolyes was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2002 New Year Honours for Services to Drama.

Margolyes previously voiced the Raxacoricofallapatorian alien Leef Apple Glyn Slitheen-Blathereen in the Doctor Who spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures television story The Gift and Frau Tod in the Big Finish Doctor Who audio story The Beast of Orlok.

Fans can only speculate what character Margolyes will play in the 60th Anniversary. Perhaps she will voice another Raxacoricofallapatorian, possibly again from the notorious crime family the Slitheen.
