It seems that the rumoured third movie in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes franchise is definitely happening.
Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr., who plays Holmes in the movies, revealed last month that “we’ll attempt to make one this year.”
Producer Joel Silver has now confirmed plans start production on Sherlock Holmes 3 this October, Den of Geek reports.
Silver told Collider: “It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He’s gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we’re trying to get it done.”
He added: “We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we’re hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we’ll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now.”
The producer also teased plans to continue the franchise with a fourth movie and beyond: “How many Bond films have they made? As long as there’s a character, we can work with it. [Sherlock Holmes 3 is] not an end story.”
Director Guy Ritchie is currently completing work on his new Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur movie, which stars Jude Law with Charlie Hunnam (Queer as Folk), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones).
The fourth season of BBC One’s Sherlock began filming last month and is expected to air in early 2017.
Co-starring Jude Law as Watson alongside Downey Jr.’s Holmes, the first Sherlock Holmes movie was released in 2009 and was followed by Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows in 2011.
