Speaking on the set of Sherlock in Cardiff earlier this month, where he was editing the third episode of the BBC One drama’s second series which he shot earlier this summer, Haynes told CultBox that he enjoys the challenge of “trying to do an action movie on a TV budget”.
Haynes has previously directed five Doctor Who episodes – including ‘The Pandorica Opens’, ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘The Impossible Astronaut’ – and began his career directing episodes of Spooks: Code 9, MI High and Holby Blue.
Explaining what attracts him to working on Sherlock and Doctor Who, the director commented: “They’re both cinematic stories about heroes and villains. They’re also two classic series that have been updated with new things. Unless you like doing hospital dramas, they’re the two best shows to work on.”
