Da Vinci’s Demons star Tom Riley will be appearing in the new series of Doctor Who.
The English actor will guest star in an episode written by Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss, who has previously written six episodes for Doctor Who, including last year’s ‘Cold War’ and ‘The Crimson Horror’. The episode begins filming this month.
Riley tweeted today: “I’ve been a massive fan since I was even smaller than Jenna [Coleman]. Very excited. [Mark Gatiss]’s script is awesome.”
He has previously appeared in Lewis, Twenty Twelve and Monroe.
The episode is rumoured to be titled ‘Robots of Sherwood’, with speculation that Riley will be playing Robin Hood.
The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine reveals that the episode will be Series 8’s third episode.
Other cast members will include Trevor Cooper (‘Revelation of the Daleks’), Ian Hallard (An Adventure in Spce and Time), David Benson, Roger Ashton-Griffiths (Mace Tyrell in Game of Thrones), Sabrina Bartlett (Suspects), Adam Jones and David Langham.
Gatiss confirmed last week: “I’ve been commissioned to write two episodes of Doctor Who. That doesn’t mean they’ll both necessarily be in [Series 8].”
Series 8 is currently filming in Cardiff and will begin airing on BBC One in the autumn.
