Baby Groot arrives with his own series of shorts… and we loved them!
Of all the characters in The Guardians of the Galaxy, the taciturn Groot might seem the most unlikely to land his own solo series. However, as he’s been granted a series of shorts with the accent on fun (and just a little mischief), things suddenly make a lot more sense.
The diminutive Flora colossus headlines five mini-adventures, each just a few minutes long. As the sapling scamp explores his world, we move from ‘Groot’s First Steps’, which sees him leave the pot, to his discovery of a miniature civilization in ‘The Little Guy’.
In ‘Groot’s Pursuit’ he deals with a doppelganger and dance moves, while in ‘Groot takes a Bath’ it’s all about fashion.
Finally, in ‘Groot’s Magnum Opus’, he enacts a grand plan and incurs the wrath of a certain genetically Racoon!
I Am Groot is a quintet of short films so here’s out short review – they’re fab! More? Okay… beautifully created, all five are full of the charm and humour of James Gunn’s movies. They are also true to the character too; the youthful Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), while petulant and capricious, remains innately lovable despite his antics.
There’s fleeting fun here for Marvel fans young and old… it’s just a shame there’s not more or it. We see clear potential for a longer adventure with this pint-sized protagonist, especially if you bring Rocket into the mix as his frustrated father figure. At least ComicBook‘s report from Marvel’s SDCC panel indicated a further five shorts in the works.
Posters!
Befitting his status, each of Groot’s adventures have been granted their own poster:
