One of Britain’s most famous comic book creations is set to find a new home on the small screen, with the recent confirmation that a Judge Dredd television series – Judge Dredd: Mega City One – is in the works.
After the 2012 movie failed to set the box office alight – in spite of positive reviews and enthusiastic fan reaction – it seemed the screen future of 2000AD’s iconic law enforcer Judge Dredd looked bleak.
However, while chatting to SFX, Jason Kingsley – the CEO of Rebellion, the company that owns 2000AD and will be overseeing the TV show – has revealed that “my best guess is that it’s at least two years away” as things stand. That would point to a 2019 release for the show, which doesn’t yet have a broadcaster attached, although it’s not going to have trouble finding one.
“We’re so early in the process”, he cautioned, “that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly”.
He described the plan for the show as one that “will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It’s a big place after all, with 400 million stories to tell”.
It’s unclear yet if Karl Urban – who memorably portrayed Dredd in the movie – will be back for the television take on the character. We can but hope.
