ITV have confirmed the commission of a new regal drama for the channel.
We love a good regal drama and with The Crown concluded, ITV may have something coming to fill the gap.
However, set in Tudor times, it will be a far cry from the structured life of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Instead, it focusses on the first Queen of England to bear that name – but don’t expect Wolf Hall either.
Majesty
Majesty depicts the life of a young Elizabeth I and her place in the court of King Henry VIII.
Rather than an historical account of Elizabeth’s early years, the show is described as “… a bold, intriguing reimagining of her life based upon conspiracy theories which surrounded her as a youth.”
It asks if the Virgin Queen was hiding a profound secret and questions how an overlooked, embattled princess become the most powerful ruler England has ever known?
Majesty comes from former Grey’s Anatomy showrunners Joan Rater, Tony Phelan and William Harper, the trio behind A Small Light. It’s being produced by Strong Film and Television, and directed by James Strong (Vigil, Mr Bates vs The Post Office).
Creators and writers William Harper, Joan Rater and Tony Phelan said:
“Majesty is an emotional, funny, and contemporary-feeling alternate history about how three outsiders try to stay alive while hiding a secret that, if discovered, would rock England to its foundations. Majesty allows us to have fun with history while illuminating who we are now. This show is pure wish-fulfilment of how people devoted to the public good suddenly find themselves in a position to make a difference.”
Director James Strong adds:
“I could not be more thrilled to be bringing this audacious and original show to the screen. The brilliant scripts are a directors’ dream as we get to re-imagine and recreate an iconic piece of English history and tell a period story that looks stunning but also feels modern and relevant to todays’ viewer.”
Majesty films in 2025, with casting revealed nearer the time. We’ll keep you posted.
