She knows when you’re lying…
Updated 16/01/22: Thanks to the Television Critics Association press tour, there’s a new trailer for Poker Face.
Creator Rian Johnson and star Natasha Lyonne have been speaking about their upcoming crime solving show, as reported in Deadline.
Johnson has been discussing the challenge of creating a series, a task he says “was very much my first rodeo”. Additionally, he spoke of the show’s enduring potential:
“It definitely wasn’t conceived as a limited series, it was conceived as something that has the architecture to keep going. We’ll put this out, see if people like it, one step at a time. There are infinite stories to tell. As people watch more and realize how different each episode is… it’s a smorgasbord of possibilities of different worlds we can dip into in each episode and whole new mysteries in each one. For me, there’s endless possibilities.”
Meanwhile, Natasha Lyonne plays central character Charlie Cale who’s gifted as a “human lie-detector”. She describes her character as “floating above a situation trying to crack a riddle, but also an everyman who has their nose to the grindstone and figuring out the sounds of the street”.
With that impossibly stellar guest cast, plus the boost of Johnson’s incredible success with Glass Onion, we imagine Poker Face might be a sizeable hit.
The show debuts four episodes on the US streamer Peacock on January 26th. We’ll keep you posted on a UK start when we hear of one.

Poker Face – teaser & date for Natasha Lyonne’s starry mystery series
The latest outing for Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll) sees her play the gifted Charlie Cale.
Created by Rian Johnson (Knives Out), Poker Face is a new murder-mystery drama. The show sees Charlie using her innate lie-detecting abilities to solve crime.
With a roving premise, think The Littlest Hobo, she’ll be on the road in a Plymouth Barracuda, encountering new characters and strange crimes each episode.
Peacock have just released a first teaser trailer for the show…
“I only know if something is a lie. The real trick of it is to figure out: Why?”
Johnson and Lyonne, both executive producers on the show, introduce it like this:
“Never underestimate the power of a good dinner conversation between friends. What started as a discussion over steak frites about detective shows and what made them such a reliable pleasure—the exploration of little worlds within each new setting, the guest stars playing killers and victims, and most importantly, a scrappy protagonist you were always ready to kick back with and see win—ultimately resulted in the creation of Charlie, the driving force behind Poker Face.”
“We invite you to follow Charlie on a cross-country road trip as she meets a rogue’s gallery of characters and avenges a new injustice each episode, armed with little more than her uncanny ability to detect lies and a genuine appreciation for her fellow humans (and the occasional dog).”
“Now please leave the overthinking to Rian, who has masterfully crafted ten self-contained puzzles for Charlie to solve. Just jump in the back of her ‘69 Plymouth Barracuda and enjoy the ride.”
Across the 10-episode run, the show’s roving format generates the opportunity for a host of guest stars.
