Scrubs – a reboot of the 00s medical comedy is in development

Posted Filed under

The original run of Scrubs starred Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke.

The cast have been making positive noises for years now, but thanks to a write-up in Deadline, we know now that a Scrubs reboot/revival might just be real.

The medical sitcom, created by the prolific Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey), ran between 2001 and 2010. It followed the lives of the medics at the Sacred Heart Hospital as they progressed from interns through to fully qualified doctors.

Across its run, the show was renowned for its daydream sequences as it followed central character JD on his flights of fancy. The medics were also trapped in an ongoing battle with the hospital’s antagonistic janitor.

The report suggest that more Scrubs has been on the cards for a while, but Lawrence’s commitments to Warner Brothers were a sticking point. However, that’s now been worked out.

Back in October, Lawrence told Deadline:

“Big chunks of the creative team behind the camera, and most of it from in front of the camera, are all super invested and excited.”

The show’s original stars Zach Braff (John “J.D.” Dorian), Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Donald Faison (Christopher Turk) and John C. McGinley (Perry Cox) are all expected to reprise their roles.

Nurse Carla Espinosa may also return too, although actor Judy Reyes has a role in the drama series High Potential. Luckily, that’s also an ABC/20th Television show, so it’s hopeful that the two productions can accommodate each other.

We’ll keep you posted on the Scrubs reboot. In the meantime, you can find all 9 original seasons on Disney+.

And if you do kick off a rewatch, stars Braff and Faison started their watch-along podcast back in 2020. It’s called Fake Doctors Real Friends with Zack and Donald.
