Star Wars: The Acolyte – premiere date announced, trailer imminent
It’s been a while since we last saw a new live action Star Wars series on Disney+. With the pipeline slowed by various factors, the last was Ahsoka which concluded in October 2023. Now it’s been announced that The Acolyte will premiere on Tuesday, June 4th, 2024.
While Ahsoka, and the forthcoming Skeleton Crew, happen in the post-Return of the Jedi period, the newest series takes place during the time of The High Republic.
For the initiated, it’s the era of the Star Wars timeline where the Jedi were at their prime and it’s been explored so far in books, comics and audio dramas. Centuries prior to the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, it should be unlike anything we’re seen before.
The Acolyte
In The Acolyte, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems….
The eight-part show is described as a mystery-thriller full of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers. With the bloody lightsabre image on its poster, there’s a suggestion of darker themes than the usual Star Wars fare.
The Acolyte comes from creator and showrunner Leslye Headland (Russian Doll). Joining Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games) and Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), the cast includes Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix).
Leslye Headland executive produces alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jeff F. King, and Jason Micallef. Charmaine DeGraté and Kor Adana are the co-executive producers; Rayne Roberts, Damian Anderson, Rob Bredow, and Eileen Shim are producing.
The trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte is due to arrive today. We’ll keep you posted.
