Please state the nature of the educational emergency! Familiar Star Trek faces return for the new Starfleet Academy series, including a certain Emergency Medical Hologram.
With production beginning next month, Paramount have confirmed a trio of Star Trek: Discovery stars for the forthcoming Starfleet Academy YA series.
The show follows a new class of cadets as they come of age at the freshly revived academy. The roots of the show were laid in Discovery, as the Federation re-established itself after “the burn.”
The show’s synopsis tells us:
The series will introduce viewers to this young group of cadets as they come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.
Jett Reno, Discovery’s wry scene-stealing engineer will appear as a series regular. She’s joined by Robert Picado as the enduringly popular holographic medic The Doctor. That sounds like the making of a terrific comic double-act to us!
The Doctor, of course, was first seen on Star Trek: Voyager. and has popped up in various iterations over the years – most recently on Star Trek: Prodigy season two.
Also appearing, as guest stars, are Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr reprising their roles as Syliva Tilly and Admiral Vance.
The new intake of Starfleet Academy
This quartet join the show’s previously announced cast which includes Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané and Zoë Steiner.
The show also stars Holly Hunter alongside recurring guest stars Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti.
Starfleet Academy’s co-showrunners and executive producers are Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. The show is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
