Superman & Lois finally lands a UK home on BBC One

The show, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch will come to Saturday nights this December.

After a lengthy wait to find a UK broadcaster, the BBC have announced they have acquired Superman & Lois.

Part of the ‘Arrowverse’ of Greg Berlanti-produced shows which air on the CW in the US, the series span out of Supergirl; Hoechlin’s Clark Kent appeared intermittently to aid his super-powered cousin, while Tulloch’s Lois was introduced for the multi-show crossovers Elseworlds and Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Here’s the synopsis for the series, which aired in the US this summer.

After years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the pair come face-to-face with one of their greatest challenges ever – dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.

Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their teenage sons Jonathan and Jordan could inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older. Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Clark’s first love, Lana Lang-Cushing, a local loan officer, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing.

Superman and Lois Back to Smallville

The adults aren’t the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle’s rebellious teenage daughter, Sarah. Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois’s father, General Samuel Lane looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when both a mysterious stranger and impassioned self-made mogul Morgan Edge enter their lives.

In addition to Hoechlin and Tulloch, Superman & Lois also stars Jordan Elsass (Little Fires Everywhere), Alex Garfin, Erik Valdez (Graceland), Inde Navarette (13 Reasons Why), Wolé Parks and Adam Rayner with Dylan Walsh (Nip/Tuck) and Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage).

Saturday nights

The BBC are placing Superman & Lois in the BBC One schedule on Saturday nights, beginning on December the 4th. The show is getting an “early evening slot” – which feels to us like an attempt to reclaim the Doctor Who/Robin Hood/Merlin slot they forsook a few years ago). They are also dropping all 15 episodes on iPlayer at that same day, for who prefer to binge.

We suppose the acquisition makes a sort of sense for BBC One, which was the home to The New Adventures of Superman in the 1990s. It would be great to see them opening the door to a few more imported genre shows.

Season 2

Superman & Lois has already been recommissioned and we recently confirmed the return of Jenna Dewan as Lucy Lane for that second run. In the US, it’s due to air from January 2022.

The show was developed by Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing, They executive produce alongside Sarah Schechter, David Madden and Geoff Johns. The DC series is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Naturally, if we hear any more, CultBox will keep you posted.
