Disney+ have revealed that the Tatooine based series will launch on the streamer on 29th December 2021.
After teasing us with a cheeky post-credits scene at the end of The Mandalorian‘s second season, it has been a long old wait for more live-action Star Wars. However, we can now confirm that The Book of Boba Fett will begin on the streaming service on Wednesday 29th December – right in the middle of that sticky old gap between Christmas and New Year.
The show, starring Temuera Morrison as the legendary bounty hunter and Ming-Na Wen (Marvel’s Agents of Shield) as his mercenary ally Fennec Shand, is set to have eight episodes but scant other details have emerged so far. From that post-credits teaser, it appears that Fett has assumed control of Jabba the Hutt’s palace.
The official Star Wars website tells us that the pair are “navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.”
Backstory
How the series might connect to the further adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu, or indeed any of the other characters from The Mandalorian remains to be seen. Equally, there’s plenty of backstory to be explored in the gap between Fett’s plummet into the Sarlacc pit in Return of the Jedi and his return during The Mandalorian series 2.
Expect more details to flow over the next couple of months, but as this Digital Spy interview with Ming-na Wen amusingly revealed, security on the show really has been tight – the actress did not even realise she was working on the spin-off!
The Book of Boba Fett is one of a host of live action Star Wars shows we are looking forward to, with Andor, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Lando also in the works, as well as The Mandalorian Series 3. We guess our Disney+ subscription isn’t going anywhere soon!
