It’s our first look at The Penguin series, the next chapter of The Batman saga.
With The Batman spin-off series The Penguin now filming, HBO Max has dropped an “in production” trailer.
It gives us a first look at Colin Farrell, reprising his role (and donning those heavy prosthetics) to play the titular villain once again.
The series picks up after the events of the film, dealing with the consequences of the Ridder’s attack on Gotham. Consequently, we can expect the city to still be a little damp! In a recent interview with Extra TV, Colin Farrell referenced this, saying:
“[The Penguin series] starts about a week after The Batman ends, so Gotham is still somewhat underwater. I read the first script for the first episode and it opens up with my feet splashing through the water in Falcone’s office. Even just that alone when I read it, I thought, “Oh jeeze!”
“I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”
Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs) joins the series as Sofia Falcone, a rival to Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot. Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Deirdre O’Connell also co-star. However, there’s no suggestion yet that we can expect an appearance from Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
The show comes from writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) Matt Reeves also executive produces, with LeFranc, Farrell, Dylan Clark and Craig Zobel. Filming is expected to continue until the autumn, prior to work beginning on the sequel film to The Batman.
The Penguin will be an eight-episode series, landing in 2024. Along with the movie it draws on, the show sits outside of the upcoming James Gunn/Peter Safran DCU plans, as part of the “Elseworlds” category.
We’ll keep you posted.
