We just can’t get enough of Sherlock Holmes. The character is continuously being reinvented; no doubt helped by the fact that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s works are now out of copyright.
From movie adaptations – we still believe that a third Robert Downey Jnr./Jude Law film will appear one day- to Prime Video’s forthcoming Young Sherlock series. There’s even a third Enola Holmes outing coming to Netflix too.
In the 2010s, the BBC’s Sherlock propelled Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman to stardom. However, the show’s drawback was the lack of it. landing in batches of three feature-length episodes with long gaps in-between.
Then, Johnny Lee Miller became Holmes for CBS’s Elementary. The show transplanted the action to New York for seven regular seasons of investigations, with 24 episodes a year. Lucy Liu starred alongside Miller as Dr Joan Watson, initially recruited as Holmes’ sober companion.
Now, Craig Sweeny, writer of 16 episodes of Elementary, is back with a fresh twist on Dr Watson. In a show that bears his name, the good doctor will pivot into investigating medical mysteries. Although Moriarty will still be lurking…
Here’s the synopsis for Watson:
Watson takes place six months after the death of the titular character’s friend and partner Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty. The show stars Morris Chestnut as Dr. John Watson, who resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though – Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century. Watson is a medical show with a strong investigative spine, featuring a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries.
The rest of the core cast are Eve Harlow (Star Trek: Discovery), Peter Mark Kendall (The Americans), Ritchie Coster (Tulsa King), Inga Schlingmann (So Help Me Todd) and Rochelle Aytes (S.W.A.T.).
Watson makes its US debut on January 26th, 2025, and streams on Paramount+.
