The Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 finale wraps up the current storyline and the voyages of the USS Discovery.
It’s been quite the ride, from two The Original Series prequel seasons which began with the Klingon War to three set in the far-flung future.
However, the adventures of the USS Discovery with Captain Michael Burnham and her crew, which began in 2017, conclude this week.
With ‘Lagrange Point’ concluding on a whopping cliffhanger, we’re set for some extra-dimensional exploration in the series finale. In ‘Life, Itself”, the story picks up as Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) pursues Moll (Eve Harlow) into a mysterious portal in search of the progenitor’s life giving or destroying technology.
Meanwhile, on the outside, the gnarly former Captain turned First Officer Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) leads the rescue mission…
While the show wasn’t initially intended to finish at Season 5 it’s been revealed (via Collider) that, after the decision was taken, extra filming days were allocated to provide appropriate closing scenes.
As the series wraps, it’s worth remembering that Discovery relaunched Star Trek on television after a 12 year absence. Since then, we’ve spun out with Captain Pike for Strange New Worlds and caught up with The Next Generation crew in Picard. Plus, the animated adventures of Lower Decks and Prodigy.
The Future
While time has been called on all of these shows, save Strange New Worlds, there is a new series incoming. Starfleet Academy also takes place in the 32nd century, offering the chance for Discovery‘s stars to cameo.
Recent news, broken in Variety, revealed the casting of Holly Hunter (Succession) as the Captain and Chancellor of the Academy. According to reports, Starfleet Academy begins shooting this summer.
Additionally, there’s the Michelle Yeoh-fronted Section 31 television movie (or “special movie event”). Also spinning out of Discovery, it follows the former Mirror Universe Emperor Phillipa Georgiou working as part of the Federation’s dirty tricks department.
Discovery’s voyages may be at an end, but their impact will ripple throughout the universe for some time to come.
Star Trek: Discovery airs on Paramount+, with the finale dropping on Thursday, May 30th, 2024.
