Welcome the New Year with the Horror Channel

Why not welcome the New Year with the Horror Channel?

This New Year’s Eve why not welcome the New Year with the Horror Channel?

There’s a tradition of ghost stories and horror for the festive season, (including the classic broadcast of Nigel Kneale’s The Stone Tapes in 1972) and lest we forget, the granddaddy of all Christmas stories [other stories are available] Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol features four spirits. As we’re unlikely to be going out and partying this year, why not find some horror to watch? And where better than the Horror Channel?

For your convenience, here’s a guide to the films being shown today (December 31).

We’re Doomed

First up at 9 pm (and top right on our picture) and it’s video game, with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. A team of space marines on a research facility in Mars find themselves up against vicious and gruesome creatures. This 2005 action/horror also stars Karl Urban (The Boys) and Rosamund Pike.

Next

Now you’re warmed up for more horror, 11:05 pm brings You’re Next (bottom right in our picture). Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, and AJ Bowen take us through midnight in this 2011 film about a family attacked by masked, crossbow-wielding killers. Nice!

Lovecraft time

More traditional horror follows at 12:55 am in Lovecraftian The Void (see tentacles and occultism in the second panel from the left above). Jeremy Gillespie, Steven Kostanski star in this 2016 story of a police officer trapped in a hospital surrounded by masked figures who tries to lead a group of survivors to safety, but stumbles onto something far more horrific.

Zombie time

If you still can’t sleep at 2:45 am, Shed of the Dead (left in our picture) may be just the light-hearted take on the zombie apocalypse you need. Spencer Brown, Lauren Socha, Ewen MacIntosh bring us this 2019 story of allotments, wargame figure painting and blood. And zombies? Did we mention zombies?

Looking forward

Whatever you do for New Year, do take care, stay safe, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Cultbox in 2021!
