The series, for Prime Video, will take inspiration from the Young Sherlock Holmes books by Andrew Lane.
We’re still waiting that long-promised third Sherlock Holmes film, but in the meantime director Guy Ritchie is returning to the character. Prime Video have just announced a new television series: Young Sherlock.
Promising all the wit and charm of Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes features, Young Sherlock will be an irreverent, action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective.
Promising an explosive re-imagining of the character, the series draws its inspiration from Andrew Lane’s critically acclaimed book series.
Here’s what we know about Young Sherlock
At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.
The series has already found its lead too in Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The actor, now 26, played the young Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and starred in Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
He’s also appeared in The Woman King, The Silencing and the After film franchise. Plus, he stars in the forthcoming survival thriller Above the Below opposite Idris Elba.
Young Sherlock comes from Inspirational Entertainment and Motive Pictures. The showrunner is Matthew Parkhill (Deep State), who both writes and executive produces, along with Ritchie and Lane.
Other executive producers are executive producers Simon Kelton (Eddie the Eagle), Ivan Atkinson (The Gentlemen), Simon Maxwell (The Woman in the Wall), Dhana Gilbert (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Colin Wilson (The Mandalorian) and Marc Resteghini, with Harriet Creelman a co-executive producer.
Guy Ritchie said:
“In Young Sherlock we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before. We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”
The series will run for eight episodes. We’ll keep you posted.
