Here’s our November 2024 Podcast Roundup – our favourites from the worlds of CultBox.
In no particular order, this month’s picks are…
I’ll Explain Later
The Doctor Who review podcast returns after an extended break, dropping episodes weekly. Now on YouTube too, hosts Jon West and Matt Nida began with ‘Blink’ and a discussion about rare DVDs.
This was followed by an examination of the Capaldi-era Zygon two-parter, an surprisingly sharp take-down of ‘The Five Doctors’, and a look at ‘The Daemons’.
The Rest is Entertainment – TV Is Dead, But Michael Parkinson Is Alive
While Goalhanger’s The Rest is Entertainment has become regular weekly listening for us, the November 5th edition was particularly fascinating. Co-host Richard Osman spoke about the AI Parkinson interview show which has been in the headlines, explaining the concept. However, the question remains – will he take up the offer to be a guest on the show?
Why? with Emma Kennedy – Why can’t we Time Travel yet?
Guest Professor of Theoretical Physics Jim Al-Khalili and Philosophy professor Nikk Effingham discuss why we haven’t cracked time travel yet – and what might happen if we did.
Brydon & Anna Chancellor
Rob talks to Anna Chancellor, with whom he co-starred in the recent My Lady Jane, about her upbringing, celebrating her late daughter’s life and her upcoming work. Naturally, there’s also some talk of Four Weddings and a Funeral too, as well as the acting renaissance of Hugh Grant.
The Doctor Who Show: The List Makers – Top Stories that should have featured a regeneration
The Doctor Who Show podcast cast is always good value – this month they looked at the work of ‘The Bristol Boys’ – Bob Maker and Dave Martin.
However, we’d really recommend the thought experiment of this month’s mini-podcast episode The List Makers, exploring stories in Doctor Who‘s history that didn’t feature a regeneration for the Doctor but were worthy of one.
Origins with Cush Jumbo – Lashana Lynch
Cush Jumbo’s podcast continues to draw in the big names, with No Time To Die and Matilda star Lashana Lynch joining her to chat about her formative years. It’s full of fascinating insights into the actor, who was about to begin the promotional trail for The Day of the Jackal.
The Franchise star Himesh Patel also appeared on Origins this month too, as well as pop star and actress Kate Nash, and the actor and rapper Ashley ‘Bashy’ Thomas’.
Film Stories
This month on the Film Stories podcast, Simon Brew explored the tales behind Tombstone, Muppets Treasure Island, Superman II, Toys, Charlie’s Angels (2000), D-Tox, Demolition Man and Hundreds of Beavers.
We’d also recommend Simon’s interview with Gladiator II producers Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick, which also provokes the most remarkable feline anecdote from the filming of Stuart Little.
So, happy listening… and do let us know if you have any recommendations too.
