The fifth and final series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, though a bittersweet experience, is the last great reminder of why generations have fallen for the feisty reporter.
For the Doctor Who fan, no events were more saddening last year than the twin losses of Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen – the latter’s passing made all the more incomprehensible by those eternally youthful looks.
The first two episodes are enthralling; well-directed by former producer Barry Letts with plenty of suspense, mystery and wonderfully undated location work.
Only the eternally impressive Lis Sladen emerges with much credit from a fatally overambitious and overblown attempt.
The fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures continues to be bold and thrilling, with a genuinely charismatic ensemble.
