Warner Bros. has decided not to release Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River – featuring Doctor Who star Matt Smith – in US cinemas.

Previously titled How to Catch a Monster, the movie also stars Iain De Caestecker (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Eva Mendes and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men).

Filmed in Detroit last year, Lost River premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival and received a mixed reaction from critics. The studio will now release the movie via home entertainment in April, Variety reports.

Matt Smith commented last year: “[Ryan Gosling is] a really inventive man and he’s got a perverse and bold and bright imagination, and he’s written this tremendous sort of Lynchian piece.”

The official synopsis reads: “A single mother enters a dark lifestyle, while her son uncovers a road leading to an underwater utopia.”

Smith will next be seen in the new Terminator movie.
