Over the years we have seen the Doctor have a few issues with mothers – usually when the mothers of his companions deliver him an almighty slap – but what about fathers?
We know that the Time Lord is a grandfather himself, and have even seen him cast in a fatherly role after a surprise addition to the family during ‘The Doctor’s Daughter’.
Keeping our distance from that particular relationship, in the vain hope of reappearance from the lovely Jenny, CultBox takes a look at Doctor Who‘s Top 5 dads…
Pete Tyler in ‘Father’s Day’, ‘Rise of the Cybermen’, ‘The Age of Steel’ and ‘Doomsday’ (2005-2006)
Introduced in ‘Father’s Day’, during an emotional visit to the 1980s, Pete Tyler was initially a bit of a disappointment to his daughter. Brought up on tales of his business acumen, Rose soon came to discover he was a failed wheeler-dealer with a roving eye.
While he sacrificed himself in our reality to fix her mistake, we soon met another Peter Tyler on a parallel Earth who was not only successful, but proved himself to be equally worthy of Rose’s affections, despite the fact that he had never had children.
Hooking up with our reality’s Jackie Tyler, he heroically saved Rose from falling into the void and even drove the family to Norway so she could see the Doctor one last time.
Guido in ‘The Vampires of Venice’ (2010)
Surely any good father has aspirations for his children to have a better life. So it was that Guido, a Venetian shipbuilder, sent his daughter Isabella to Rosanna Calvierri’s school.
However, realising that that all was not right with his daughter’s education, he allied himself with the Doctor and ultimately gave his life to destroy Rosanna’s ‘Vampires’, heroically blowing then up with gunpowder.
Brian Williams in ‘Dinosaurs on a Spaceship’ and ‘The Power of Three’ (2012)
Mark Williams, star of the Harry Potter films and The Fast Show, was perfectly cast as Rory’s dad.
Beginning as a man who disliked travel, he soon adapted after an accidental abduction by TARDIS and took an adventure involving space travel, Queen Nefertiti and dinosaurs in his stride. Returning home, he gained both a wanderlust and a fresh appreciation of his son.
After helping out during the slow invasion of the cubes, Brian remained behind to look after the house when his Rory and Amy resumed their travels with the Doctor and never returned.
Rory Williams (2010–2012)
Though some might have written Rory off as a wimp, he rose to the occasion bravely to save his wife and child during the events of ‘A Good Man Goes To War’. To be fair to Rory, he did not actually know Amy was pregnant and had been replaced with a flesh replica before that point.
While the focus was generally on Amy and River’s mother/daughter relationship, Rory’s fronting up against the Cybermen earns him plenty of Dad points in our book.
